Growing confidence, independence, and purpose.
Middle School is a transformative stage in a learner’s journey, where increasing independence, self-awareness, and academic challenge come together. As learners explore their identities, strengths, and aspirations, we support their growth not only as students, but also as confident, resilient, and compassionate individuals.
Guided by the IB Middle Years framework, our programme encourages learners to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and make connections between their learning and the world around them.
Entrepreneurship & Innovation
Every year, our MYP learners take on entrepreneurial and STEAM challenges that encourage them to think like innovators and problem-solvers. Working collaboratively, they explore real-world needs, develop creative solutions, and bring their ideas to life through purposeful projects.
What are Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills?
ATL skills are the practical skills that help learners become successful learners and confident individuals. They include communication, collaboration, critical thinking, research, organisation, self-management, and reflection.
Just as important as what learners know is how they learn. ATL skills help learners manage their time, work effectively with others, solve problems, communicate ideas, and take increasing responsibility for their own learning—skills that will benefit them throughout school, university, and life.
-
In today's world, success depends on more than academic knowledge. Learners need to know how to solve problems, manage their time, work effectively with others, communicate ideas, and adapt to new challenges. ATL skills help learners become confident, independent, and lifelong learners.
-
ATL skills are embedded across the curriculum and taught through authentic learning experiences. Whether learners are conducting research, collaborating on projects, reflecting on their progress, or presenting their ideas, they are continuously developing these transferable skills.
-
ATL skills help learners succeed not only in school but also at university, in their careers, and in life. They develop the ability to think critically, learn independently, communicate effectively, and navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

English at LIS is designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, learners develop the confidence to communicate effectively, think critically, and express themselves with clarity and creativity.
-
LIS aims to create opportunities for its students, and therefore, despite it not being part of the IB Programme, the curriculum for these years will also include First Language Portuguese.
In this subject, LIS will follow the Portuguese National Curriculum and will place a firm emphasis on the development of oral expression, vocabulary, reading skills, writing skills including spelling, grammar, and language structure.
At LIS we offer a Second Language Portuguese Programme for students that are not native Portuguese speakers or who have not previously been taught in a Portuguese-medium school.
-
During our Mathematics Programme, LIS students develop a holistic understanding of the subject, focussing on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships. They will become mathematically competent and fluent in computation, which they can apply to everyday situations.
‘Thinking and working mathematically’, a unique feature of the Cambridge Mathematics Curriculum, encourages students to talk with others, challenge ideas, and to provide evidence that validates conjectures and solutions. When students are thinking and working mathematically, they actively seek to make sense of ideas and build connections between different facts, procedures, and concepts. This supports higher-order thinking that helps them to view the world in a mathematical way. Students will develop skills in: Numbers, Algebra, Geometry and Measure, Statistics, and Probability.
-
Students will think scientifically and develop practical skills alongside knowledge and understanding, which is vital for explaining the world around us. Improving students’ awareness of Science in the world around them develops their sense that ‘Science is for me’, helping to connect themselves to the subject.
This approach provides them with the knowledge and skills they require to excel at Science in later stages of education and to make informed choices, including considering sustainability issues and meeting the challenges facing our environment.
-
Global Perspectives develops the skills that matter most in today's world: critical thinking, research, communication, collaboration, and reflection. By exploring real-world issues and multiple perspectives, learners build the confidence and capabilities needed to succeed across subjects, in High School, and beyond.
